Physical Education Lessons

These lessons were created as a part of the Health Education and Physical Education in Elementary Schools course at Auburn University. All of the lessons listed below were made in the Fall of 2016, specifically for first grade. Click the title to be taken to the full lesson design.

Being able to strike objects with some kind of implement is important to many sports out there. Sports like golf, tennis, badminton; table tennis and many other sports involve striking objects with implements. This lesson allows students to practice using their striking skills by playing a game where they have to save their partner stranded at sea!

This lesson makes the assumption that the students know how to dribble a basketball skillfully. Instead of focusing on teaching that skill, this lesson reinforces the skill by playing a game balled Musical Ball Bounce.

This lesson builds upon the skill of kicking. There is a short recap of how to kick a soccer ball, then the students play a game. The goal of the game is to knock down as many bowling pins as possible.

What kind of sport requires you to run super fast? That’s right, track and field! This lesson allows students to play a game that requires them to be able to flee and dodge, just like a runner.

What does a magician do? That’s right, they use a wand to perform magic! I want you to put on your imagination glasses, and guess what kind of animal a magician with a magic wand might turn someone into. The answer for this game is a frog! This lesson allows students to practice their fleeing and dodging skills.

This lesson teaches students the proper volleying form by pretending to fish for balls! Students will volley their beach balls into a plastic pool, where a teacher sits inside, acting as the "fish." This teacher will throw the balls back to the students to allow them to volley again. This lesson is fun for everyone!

This lesson is on throwing, which is a skill required by both baseball and softball, but it’s also a skill that you can use in everyday life, like throwing away trash! Students will learn the correct throwing form, then play a game that requires lots of teamwork!
